![]() Fashionable Eye's Los Angeles correspondent has her hands full, not only writing about winter fashion in one of the world's glitziest location (LA), but Liberty Matias will also cover all that is fashion along the Sunny Cali Front. ![]() Patricia wears a multi-coloured head band, a shawl is draped over a blue strapless dress, completeing this look is a wide black belt. It’s that time again – time to throw on extra layers and revisit some of our favorite knitted tops. As we stroll through the streets, we admire autumnal foliage and anxiously await crisp winds ushered in by the winter season. However, it’s also time to lust after luxurious fall and winter fashion as stores fill their shelves. And California natives never miss a moment to a) seek and acquire the latest fashion trend or b) create their own, making a statement for all to observe, and possibly mass produce at an Urban Outfitters near you! California is home to two major fashion metropolises, Los Angeles and San Francisco. These city streets are walked by some of the most influential fashion trend setters. Some are big name designers and some are average guys and gals just like myself, longing to hone in on the art of individuality. Not only is the sunny state known for its varied climate and geography, but also it diverse population. Diversity, in a fashion sense, is utterly important. In the case of LA and SF, it’s the amazing talent natives have for transforming a myriad of inspirations into iconic collections. Fall/Winter 08 fashion trends came in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Though there are always essential items that carry over from past seasons. This year magnified specific styles that embodied a dynamic and unique energy with an eclectic style – one that is 08 memorable. This season, key trends spotted in and around the major cities for women were: relaxed jackets, scarves, romantic tops with ruffles, boots (long and short), skinny jeans, tailored dresses, free-flowing cotton dresses, chunky waist belts, knitted tops, knitted scarves, knitted beanies, versatile pea coat, and the many bold accessories, including head pieces. But, the current fashion scene also reflects individuals’ approach to style, rather than one key look or trend. These items are merely inspirations and reflections of popular themes of the hour. LA and SF trend setters use these items to either downplay a trend or dial up one, in the end; it’s all to make a statement, a bold statement at best! The commonly seen items for men’s attire were: plaid all the way – shirts, coats, vests, etc., dress boots, and long, classic thermals, oversized cardigans, v-neck relaxed shirts, and fleece hoodie sweatshirts for the casual, but chic, man. ![]() Patricia wears a red thigh length coat, blue scarf, black tights and shiny black knee length boots. This fall and winter seasons were all about colors and layering pieces one would not normally pair together. Although in the past, the fall/winter trends were characteristic of more mod, grey to black themed prints, the styles hitting the streets and the runways of LA and SF showed otherwise. Light, cotton dresses, full of color and design were paired with earthy-toned wraps and cardigans. To add color to a subtle ensemble, wrapping a bold-patterned scarf was usually a hit this fall season. Layering is pertinent during cold, winter nights, but of course with anything in fashion, layering with a stylistic slant is always better. Thick crochet or knitted pieces often complement a form-fitting shirt and high-wasted skirt, as seen on Patricia. The floral patterns on the skirt channel commonly used colors during the fall/winter seasons, purple, gray, pink, and a splash of orange. Skirts and leggings and/or tights were also a hit, and continue to be one this season as more and more patterns and designs emerge on the shelves of high end stores. Commonly worn with high-wasted skirts during the winter season are simple black nylons, knitted wool stockings, and cotton tights. Patricia adds an urban touch with the quintessential flat boot (long or short will do) to wear with anything from skinny jeans to skirts to those maxi dresses. What’s a winter wardrobe without essentials like form fitting jeans and a nice tailored pea coat? This season, not only did we continue the timeless trend, but we dialed up the colors and trim, to enhance generally navy-colored heavy wool we’ve all come to appreciate. Embellish the outfit with another bold scarf and complementary accessories, and you’ve got yourself a comfy, warm, fashion-forward ensemble! Now that all the main fall/winter fashion shows have happened we have plenty to refer as we choose the right outfit to wear to school, work, parties, etc. And remember proportion is important, especially when wearing some of the hottest LA/SF items out there. Mix and match pieces like the loose feminine dresses with a monochromatic cardigan for an ultimate comfort-driven ensemble. Always match style to your personality, never overdoing it by being a slave to media and brands, a tip most LA and SF natives swear by! So, as we continue this chilly winter season, flirt with new colors and bring up the temperature with comfort-minded, chic essentials. This is not a time to hibernate, get out there and mix up cottons and wools for a creative venture! Liberty Matias. |
