Hong Kong

Doris Chiu, Fashionable Eye's Hong Kong fashion correspondent writes about the Winter 2009 trends and must haves from one of Asia's most fashionable capitals.

Winter has finally arrived and the gals have already pulled out their leather black boots and Burbery scarves.

This year’s winter is very much about the Prairie Blue and dark purple for the bland wardrobes. The trend for the working women is always about looking 'Sexy and Classy'.

Waists have returned with curvy dresses, streamlined pencil skirts or belts shouting emphasis on the waist. Shirts are not skin tight by far but definitely outline the slim line of the feminine form for the sexier and edgier style.

Definitely ‘in’ is the oversized dark-coloured snuggling knits with lighter colored belts, over tight black non-transparent stocking and knee high boots. FYI, to spot the look that doesn't set your wallet back much at all, stockings can be sourced in the Ladies Market for less than AU$6 for a quality pair. ‘Cameron Road’ at Tsim Sha Tsui is also great for trendy Knits and boots less that AU$20 a piece. The Metallic age is gone in modern Hong Kong. Definitely ‘out’ is Metallic-coloured leggings and Silver clothing. Stick with colour for a fashionable Hong Kong look.

Four Trends to hit HK this season:

  1. Coats - HK is more into the shorter coats as it doesn't really get colder than 10 degrees. So looking at current Global Warming trends, shorter coats are a good investment.
Invest in a good coat that you will look and feel fantastic in, if you have a chance to buy a designer piece go for it. Especially with all these 50% signs in 'Lancrawford' and 'Seibu' we can only imagine further reduction in prices as the New Year comes which is fantastic for the bargain designer shoppers now.
  2. Shoes / Boots - This winter, the ankle high booties are 'in' along with the knee high boots, laced-up boot and cut-out shoes. Spot a pair of Jimmy Choo's gorgeous fringes and tassles and that would be the perfect present for yourself. Fur heeled lace up boots over jeans are casual but also elongates the legs which most Honkie gals opt for to give that extra height and lengthen the leg. This is something you can easily adapt and who doesn’t want to feel tall and fabulous.
  3. Faux Fur - Vests or short above-the-waist is cute and goes with jeans and boots creating a casual winter looks. Fur is the epitome of wealth and royalty. Faux fur became such an important part of fashion and being animal friendly, some even look better then the real thing. A great look is the Fendi Fur range, not over the top but gorgeous giving you that fabulous look.
  4. Accessories - Purple ( big and bright like Grimace from McDonald) is the purple we’re looking for. Whether as a clutch, earring, necklace or ring, it can really make an outfit shine. The colour is back from the 60’s, dormant for over 3 decades, and back with spite. Pick the vivid purple and you hit the hottest HK streets with color trend.

So there you go, Ladies! The Fashion must-haves from HK and the fashion trends for this winter. I'm still working to complete my winter wardrobe and it’s time for you to start pulling things in to prepare for the Australian Winter. We’ve given you a headstart!
